The New guard FAQ: what it means for Blob Guard.

So with the new FAQ's appearing I'm going to break what i was intending to put up and look at the guard updates and comment on the ones I think may be of benefit for Blob Guard lists.
The first point I'll discuss is:

Q: Can Ministorum Priests or Techpriest Enginseers be taken as the mandatory HQ choice? (p93)
A: Yes.
This one looks kind of insignificant but it means we don't have to take Company command squads or Lord Commissars now! So instead for blob guard lists we could buy 2 priests or even one and run them as our HQ. I'm not sure why people wouldn't take a CCS and buff it with Creed or Straken, but it will have a lot of merit in smaller point games when you can take a Priest with shotgun and Eviscerator to lead from within one of your blobs. The points saved can nicely be spent on either more men or some more special weapons.

Q: Can Weaken Resolve target an enemy unit that is locked in close combat? (p47)
A: Yes.
Nice, initially I'd passed off the used of Psyker squads in Blob armies as they lack any pinning weapons or enough long range firepower to make the enemy take leadership tests early on, but with the ability to make them minus Ld while in combat it means the blobs would have much better chances of winning combats and chasing down the enemy units which aren't fearless, and for fearless units if they don't maul a ton of my men they may be taking fearless wounds.

Q: How many Kill Points is a Company Command Squad worth? (p30)
A: One.
A nice clearing up just it seems, handy to just have written down to stop the old mentality some people might still have from older editions... Straken and his squad still being only 1 KP? makes me smile knowing his is now in writing.

Page 96 – Infantry Platoon, second sentence Change to “Each Infantry Platoon is deployed in place of a single unit in missions that limit the number units that can be deployed. In addition when making a reserve or outflanking roll, roll once for the whole Infantry Platoon. Any units in reserve that are embarked upon a non-dedicated transport are instead rolled for separately.”
Excellent! Finally in writing that a entire blob is deployed as a single troops unit... this makes me so happy to finally have in black and white. It now means I can deploy Straken's squad and both 40 man blobs and their PCS's right off the bat half way up the table if I wish and only be about 18 inches from the enemy army... if this is a shooty army It means much less damage as I advance, and for objective missions it will be golden for allowing me less turns needed to get into position. Or against a HTH army I deploy my two PCS’s forward (Or a 10 man squad if I feel like killing 10 men to keep more space between the rest of my forces and the enemy.

If I do go second and they enemy pushes me back awe well, at least now I can deploy the entire platoon and begin the march without them querying me on what is allowed down on DOW deployment.

Golden and a good FAQ imo from GW.

  1. It's not just the blob...it's the whole Platoon. So PCS, infantry squads, heavy weapons squads, special weapons squads, conscripts, chimeras (though not applicable to blob lists)...you could fully deploy two fleshed out platoons and a walking CCS in a DoW game.

  2. That will make for very fun games now as guard, especially melta units, two tooled up platoons right on the halfway line could make for very sore games.
